Sacred Sun Grid Hawaii: Winter Solstice
Ke Ao Polohiwa a Kanaloa (The Winter Solstice) is one of the four major turning points of the year. The winter solstice marks the sun's lowest point in the sky and its metaphorical journey into the underworld the deep, dark ocean realm of Kanaloa in Hawai'i. Kanaloa is one of the four major akua (gods) in Hawai'i, primarily associated with the deep ocean, long-distance voyaging, and healing. Kanaloa represents depth, navigation, and the cosmic balance between light and darkness. In Hawai'i, winter solstice is known as Ke Ala Polohiwa a Kanaloa (The Black Glistening Path of Kanaloa). Kanaloa is considered the god of the underworld and teacher of magic and healing.
Ancient Hawaiians divided the sky into zones based on the sun's movement throughout the year:
The Southern Realm —Kanaloa governs the deep, dark ocean, the southern sky, and the underworld.
The Solstice Point — During the winter solstice in December, the sun hits its southernmost point on the horizon, tracking along the Tropic of Capricorn.
Entering the Realm — Because the sun has traveled as far south as possible, it enters Kanaloa's dark ocean domain, resulting in the shortest day and longest night of the year.
Time of Darkness and Reflection — The longest night is viewed as a sacred period for honoring ancestors and looking inward.
The Return of Light — Once the sun finishes its journey along Kanaloa's path, it "turns around" to head north again, symbolizing a renewal of light and hope.
In this special moment in time, we will journey like Kanaloa — a voyage to sacred points on the Big Island. We will activate a Solar Grid of light, reflecting healing energy through powerful meditations at these sacred sites, connecting the light down to the Earth's depths all the way up to the mountain peaks.
This is a potent portal, making a sacred grid of the micro and macro. We will have time for relaxation and reflection between the journeys.
